Description

Río Piedras, PR, Government of Porto Rico Board of Commissioners of Agriculture Insular Experiment Station, 1916. 8vo (22.5 x 14.3 cm). 140 pp.; nine plates of which one in full colour, and one folded map. Later dark red cloth with gilt title on the spine. Original printed front wrapper bound in. A seldom-seen if not rare early publication on the birds of Puerto Rico, written by the influential American ornithologist Frank Alexander Wetmore (1886-1978). The large, folded map ("plate II") includes Puerto Rico, Vieques, Culebra, and Mona island and shows Wetmore's itinerary and collecting localities. The full colour plate shows a tody and acts as frontispiece. Printed in Washington, DC, at the Government Printing Office, and published as the U.S. Department of Agriculture Bulletin 326 and reprinted as Board of the Commissioners of Agriculture Bulletin 15 (this copy). Old former owner's signature in the top margin of the front wrapper, otherwise a very good, clean and unmarked copy. Not in Nissen IVB.
